There are currently 123 Spanish embassies abroad as well as 430 consulates. There can only be one Spanish embassy in a single country but there is no limit on the number of consulates. For example, in the USA there is one embassy and 34 consulates.
Spanish embassies are situated in the capital city of each country, consulates are located in other major cities. Although consulates offer fewer services than embassies, travelers wishing to visit Spain can apply for a visa at either.

What can I do at the Embassy?
Citizens who want to visit Spain can apply for a Schengen Visa at any Spanish embassy or consulate. In addition to Schengen Tourist Visas, people can also apply for Student Visas, Work Visas, and Residence Visas.
In 2021, the ETIAS Visa Waiver will be implemented. Many nationalities, who can currently enter Spain visa-free, will need one to be able to enter Spain or any of the other Schengen countries.
ETIAS applications will not be made at embassies or consulates, the travelers will apply online by completing the quick and simple application form. Approved ETIAS Visa Waivers will be valid for 3-year periods and will be sent to visitors by email.
