Spanish embassies in Taiwan
The consular section can provide useful information regarding the visa application and the travel documentation that Taiwanese citizens need in order to travel to Spain.
Spain is a European country situated in the Mediterranean area with the capital city in Madrid. The country is one of the 26 member states of the Schengen Area, allowing citizens from other member states freedom of movement from one country to the other, within the Schengen area.
Currently, there are also other countries outside of the EU and of the Schengen Area that are allowed to enter the area visa-free but this will no longer be applicable from 2021 when a new electronic travel authorization, ETIAS Visa Waiver, will be introduced.
Taiwanese are among these citizens. An agreement between the EU and Taiwan signed in 2010 has allowed citizens holders of a Taiwanese passport to travel to any country in the Schengen area visa-free for tourism purposes for up to three months within six months. However, Taiwan is on the list of eligible countries for the ETIAS when this one will be introduced.
It’s important to keep in mind that the ETIAS is not a visa and the process for obtaining it is meant to be fast and straightforward.
Even after the introduction of the ETIAS, depending on the purpose of their trip to Spain and the length of their permanence within the Schengen area, Taiwanese citizens might still be required to apply for a visa.
In such cases, the consular section of Spain in Taipei is the main point of contact for all inquiries regarding visas, travel documentation, and other consular services.
