Spanish embassies in Uruguay
There is only one diplomatic representation of Spain in Uruguay, the Spanish Embassy, located in the capital city, Montevideo. The Spanish embassy is one of the 109 foreign representations in Uruguay.
Spain is one of the most visited European countries. Located in the Mediterranean area in the south of Europe and with the capital city in Madrid, Spain is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. This means that citizens from other member countries can travel to Spain visa-free.
On the other hand, citizens from many countries outside of Europe and the Schengen Area need to apply for a Schengen Visa to visit Spain for tourism purposes. The Schengen Visa allows travelers to stay within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days.
Citizens of Uruguay are among the ones that currently need to possess a Schengen Visa to travel to Spain. However, this is meant to change with the introduction of the ETIAS Visa Waiver at the end of 2022. The ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that will eliminate the necessity to go to an embassy to obtain a visa.
Until this new process will be in place, and for all other types of visas except for the tourist one, citizens of Uruguay can submit all inquiries regarding the necessary travel documentation to the consular section of the embassy of Spain.
Citizens planning to travel to Spain should note that the process of obtaining a Schengen Visa can take around two weeks and up to 45 days in rare cases. To avoid inconveniences, they should plan accordingly.
